Institute of Applied & Computational Mathematics

Welcome to FORTH / IACM

Since its establishment in 1985 the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics has a recognized tradition in conducting basic and applied research in the general area of Applied and Computational Mathematics. It has good computing facilities and a wide range of research activities, a large part of which is funded by competitive research grants. Through its research programs the Institute has developed many collaborative projects and relations with other research groups in Universities, Research Centers and Organizations in Greece and abroad.

Current problems in science and technology are of such size and complexity that their solution requires wide and in depth application of the modern techniques of applied and computational mathematics and the increasing participation of mathematicians in the interdisciplinary teams of scientists that tackle them. In many scientific areas high, state-of-the-art technologies are gradually becoming mathematical technologies and computational experiments are replacing conventional experiments. All these factors are potentially favourable for further development and growth of IACM.

The research groups of IACM are active in interdisciplinary research projects characterized by a wide spectrum of methodologies, techniques and applications in the following areas:

  • Wave propagation problems with emphasis in underwater acoustics
  • Analysis and numerical methods for partial differential equations occurring in mathematical models in the physical and biomedical sciences and technology.
  • Numerical methods and scientific computing in fluid mechanics.
  • Geoinformatics, application of mathematical and computational methods and tools in regional analysis and remote sensing.
  • Educational research and evaluation.
The first director and founder of IACM in 1985 was Prof. John S. Papadakis. Since 2004, Prof. Vassilios A. Dougalis is the Director of the institute.
